Leading With Kindness (Even When It Feels Like You're Alone)
Apr 04, 2025
What do you do.
When you're the primary one showing up with passion, purpose, and a drive for excellence...
Yet you're surrounded by people who don’t seem to share that same fire?
It’s a question I hear often.
A leader recently asked me...
"How do I keep showing up everyday with energy and excellence when others around me don't seem to care?"
"How do I get them to care too?”
Here’s what I shared—and what I’ll share with you.
Close Some Windows
Literally and figuratively, on your computer and in your mind.
We often have "too many open tabs".
So many emails, tasks, doubts, pressures, even perhaps, many doubts.
Clutter makes it hard to focus on what matters.
When you’re busy (and you always are), simplify.
- Close Some Windows
- Breathe
- Focus On The Most Important Thing First, Complete It As Soon as Possible
- Then Move On To The Next Item
- Literally Check Items Off Your List
Remember Your Why
One leader told me their phone wallpaper was a photo of the beach, because it reminds them to stay calm and grounded.
That image? That’s typically your "WHY." When the “WHAT” gets overwhelming, go back to that. Why you serve. Why you lead. Why kindness matters.
If the “WHY” is strong enough,
The “HOW” becomes "EASY"
Continue to Lead With Kindness
What if your board doesn’t value kindness?
What if your coworkers think being “nice” is a waste of time?
Demonstrate how effective this leadership style can be, prove it.
Make "kindness" part of your lineup, your pre-shift, your meetings.
Start Celebrating Kindness Out Loud
- Applaud the Manager who recognized an employee's hard work publicly during a team meeting, boosting morale and motivation.
- Highlight the Sales Leader who mentored a struggling team member, taking extra time to coach them toward success rather than letting them fall behind.
- Celebrate the Customer Service Representative who went out of their way to resolve a client's issue, turning a negative experience into a positive one.
Most leaders overlook the power of small, thoughtful actions in the workplace, but you don't.
You embody Effective Kindness Leadership, fostering a culture of empathy and excellence.
Most people don’t take the time to spotlight these moments, but you do.
Create a Kindness Strategy
This isn’t fluff. This is fuel.
Kindness isn't a random act—it's a repeatable strategy that improves retention, morale, and service.
One company created a “Mountaineer Award” to honor people going above and beyond.
Another used the theme of their city—a Pittsburgh incline—to recognize those lifting others up.
Make it your own.
Make it happen.
"When you speak up, when you lead with heart, when you consistently do what most people don’t… you also start to attract others who do."
- You Will Inspire Others To Rise
- Keep Going
- Keep Breathing
- Keep Closing Those Windows And Open Your Heart
And if you need a nudge, text me.
I’ve got your back.
