"With tears her in eyes, yet a smile on her face…"

She responded, "it's going".

I asked the question “How are things going?”, to an attendee a few hours prior to stepping on stage for my keynote.  She responded very calmly with a smile on her face, “It’s going”.  I did, however, notice a quick swell of tears in her eyes.  I gently pressed a little further, “What does that mean?”.

This young leader had been in her role for over 10 years and things were not getting any easier.  In her industry, she was solving problems that she did not create.  She was creating solutions to situations that were beyond her responsibility.  Her personality contributed to making the extra effort to help others, despite shifting energy away from what she personally needed.

I told her that she needed to come to my session as I believed she would hear a message that was created specifically just for her.

10 minutes into my message, I spotted her from the stage in the sea of attendees.  YES!

Her job was not easy.  She did not always get the appreciation she deserved from her clients or from her company.

Staffing remained short.  Problems since the pandemic continued to escalate.

Short staff, long problems.

She stayed in her role because she knew she was HELPING OTHERS and simply needed to be reminded to DO HER BEST.

The survey that I conducted for this group shared some best practices for how to deal with challenging situations:

  1. Realize that when other people may treat you poorly, IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU.  Don’t take it personally.  They are frustrated by the situation.  Most likely they are not mad at you.
  2. PERFORM don’t PERSONALIZE.
  3. Nothing is an emergency unless it is actually an emergency
  4. Stay calm, breathe, and Always #BeBamboo
  5. Divide the matter into smaller tasks
  6. Listen carefully and don’t rush to a decision
  7. Evaluate URGENT vs IMPORTANT
  8. Remember the reasons WHY you are in the job that you are in.  You GET to help people, you GET to solve problems, and you GET to be creative in offering solutions to make others more comfortable.

After my KEYNOTE MESSAGE was completed, she approached me, thanked me, and agreed “This message was exactly what I needed.”  I re-asked her, “How are things going?”.  She responded, “Better, because I know I am doing my best.”
