We've all worked with people who hustle.
Early in.
Last to leave.
Eyes on the numbers.
But the ones we remember most?
They didn’t just work hard.
They cared even harder.
One of my favorite examples is from my friend John Harper.
It wasn’t during a keynote.
It wasn’t in a meeting.
It wasn’t in a title.
It was in a snowstorm.
Over 30 years ago at the Grand Hyatt Washington a freak snowstorm rolled through. No coats. No ice scrapers. Just chaos. John, new to the team and still finding his footing—stayed in the freezing cold helping everyone else clean off their cars. One by one.
He didn’t ask for help.
He didn’t look for credit.
He just did it, because he cared.
Work Hard. Care Even Harder.
That’s what real leadership looks like.
It’s not about a fancy title. It’s not about shouting directions from the top.
It’s about earning trust by consistently showing up for people—especially when no one’s watching.
For 25 years, John didn’t just show up to work; he delivered excellence—not for the paycheck, but for the people.
Up at 5 AM every day.
Traveling 49 out of 52 weeks.
Tireless, because he stayed focused on who he was serving.
At the end of each day, he glances at his watch.
A nod to his father’s influence.
He switches gears. Cuts it off. Turns to fun.
For John, hospitality isn't just work; it's joy.
His vocation is his vacation.
